ESSENTIALS FOR HEALTHY HOMES PRACTICIONERS
If you visit homes to provide health or inspection services of any type, you will benefit from the Essentials for Healthy Homes Practitioners course. The training will help you understand the connection between health and housing and how to take a holistic approach to identify and resolve problems that threaten the health and well-being of residents.
Everyone from a public health nurse visiting a client to an environmental health professional doing a rodent inspection will gain insight into how housing and health are related and actions they can take to improve the health of their clients. This two-day course brings together professionals with a variety of perspectives and experiences in a series of exercises — keeping the training lively and engaging.
The training complements hazard-specific training in lead-based paint, radon, mold, pests, and asbestos. It identifies root causes of health problems in a home and links them to seven principles of healthy housing: keep it dry; keep it clean; keep it pest-free; keep it ventilated; keep it safe, keep It contaminant-free; and keep it maintained. Course participants will have a better understanding of how to collaborate to make healthy homes a reality in their community.
Desired learning outcomes: The learner will have a better understanding of how to address health issues and hazards with the resident. They will gain knowledge on how to communicate effectively with the resident regarding these hazards as well as how to advise the resident on how to resolve these hazards.
CODE INSPECTION FOR HEALTHY HOMES
The Code Inspection for Healthier Homes course is a one-day course for code inspectors. Participants learn about the prevalence of common housing maintenance problems from data based on the American Housing Survey. The course also provides information on the health-related provisions of state and local housing codes and the International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC). Participants also learn about the strengths and weaknesses of various enforcement strategies on resident health.
HEALTHY HOME ASSESSMENT FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS
This course is designed specifically for community health workers (CHWs), and other home visitors who provide health education to residents. The course provides these individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to perform a basic healthy home assessment. First, students will complete the online prerequisite course, Basic Principles of Healthy Homes, which examines the link between health and housing and introduces the 8 Principles of Healthy Homes. Then, in this instructor-led course, CHWs will learn about housing codes and the fundamentals of resident interviews before participating in an onsite inspection. They will gain experience in choosing and filling out assessment forms, and in developing action plans that indicate who is responsible for handling each identified hazard. Finally, CHWs will practice effective strategies for educating residents.
HEALTHY HOMES ASSESSMENT: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE
This training provides the basic knowledge and skills individuals needs to perform basic healthy home assessments. It is intended for those professionals who have completed either the Essentials for Healthy Homes Practitioners or the Healthy Homes Essentials for Environmental Professionals course and who plan to perform home assessments as part of their professional activities. This course teaches the basic skills needed to take an environmental history, to perform a systematic visual assessment of indoor environments, how to use basic assessment tools, basic environmental sampling concepts and effective communication of assessment results. Course participants will have obtained specific assessment skills that allow them to advise home occupants on the best actions to take to resolve environmental problems and make their home the healthiest it can be.
HEALTHY HOMES FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS
This course teaches Community Health Workers (CHWs) how to provide healthy homes information to members of their communities. The Healthy Homes for Community Health Workers course is targeted to individuals who work as health advocates in their communities.
This course trains CHWs to provide one-on-one and large group education on healthy homes, provide general advice about specific healthy homes problems, and be able to recommend healthy homes approaches to be taken by families, landlords and other community members.
INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT IN MULTIFAMILY HOUSING
The Integrated Pest Management in Multifamily Housing course is designed to help property managers and owners implement a comprehensive integrated pest management (IPM) program by bringing the stakeholders, especially resident leaders, together to develop the skills and practices needed to effectively eliminate pests such as cockroaches and rodents from multifamily housing.
